UN Lifts Restrictions on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip next week.
He became provisional head of state after leading a revolutionary movement that drove out Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of civil war.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.
More Penalties Removed
Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for their support of Syria and its people."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The pair met initially in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to America in the current year. This past fall, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the UN General Assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
- The Middle Eastern president speaks before global body for first time in almost 60 years
- The presidential discussion with Sharaa, previously unimaginable, elevates national expectations
